European award for the Institute of Democracy ‘Konstantinos Karamanlis’

A European award for the think tank that had the best collaboration with the think tank of the famous Martens Center for European Studies, in Brussels, was won by the Institute of Democracy “Konstantinos Karamanlis”. The announcement was made on Tuesday during the General Assembly of the think tanks of the European People’s Party, which took place online, after the cancellation of the EPP Congress (it was to take place in Rotterdam, but did not take place due to health developments in the Netherlands).

Announcing the award, the President of the Martens Center and former Prime Minister of Slovakia, Mikulas Dzurinda, underlined the important work done by the Konstantinos Karamanlis Institute for Democracy in recent years in promoting European principles and values, even in difficult times for the European idea. He also praised the contribution of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to European issues, typically saying that this is an added value not only for Greece, but also for the European Union as a whole and the European People’s Party.

The reason for the award was, according to sources from the Institute of Democracy Konstantinos Karamanlis, his collaboration with the Martens Center for the organization of the first online events as soon as the quarantine broke out and the great success they marked, as well as the event organized with his participation. of Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, on Euro-Turkish relations and the geopolitical situation in the Eastern Mediterranean in the autumn of 2020, shortly before the respective Summit.

As mentioned, these events, in addition to the important content, received a wide response from the public as the event “The threat of revisionism – Security challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean” was attended by more than 15,000 citizens in Greece and abroad. In fact, this event had “fallen victim” to a hacking attempt faced by EPP technicians in Brussels.

On behalf of the Institute of Democracy Konstantinos Karamanlis, finally, the Head of International Relations, Panagiotis Kakolyris, underlined the great importance of this award for the Institute, characteristically pointing out that it comes at a time when Greece has regained an active European role, with a positive sign, with the initiatives taken by the government. He also said that the aim of the event for the Eastern Mediterranean was to highlight the discussion on the geopolitical role of Europe as well as to address important and real threats to security and stability in the region from Turkey. The Institute will continue the effort to promote new political ideas and approaches to political innovation at national and European level, concluded P. Kakolyris.
