European Council: Official ban on Belarusian air carriers from EU airspace

Following the decisions of the European Council of 24 and 25 May, the Council of the EU (Member States) today decided to strengthen existing measures against Belarus by banning overflights on Belarusian air carriers. airspace access to EU airports, according to the RES. Hence, EU Member States should refuse permission to land, take off, or fly over their territory, on aircraft operated by Belarusian air carriers, including commercial aircraft.

It is recalled that the European Council of 24 and 25 May 2021, Strongly condemned the illegal forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk on 23 May 2021, endangering aviation safety. In addition, in the European Council conclusions, the Heads of State and Government condemn his detention journalist Roman Protasevic and Sofia Sapega by the Belarusian authorities and call on the Council to adopt the necessary measures, including an additional list of persons and entities, on the basis of the relevant sanctions framework and further targeted financial sanctions.
