A first round of limited EU sanctions against Russia will take effect today, according to a European diplomat, and will affect more politicians, while banning trade relations between the European Union and the two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine. .
The EU has chosen not to impose sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin himself, but instead to freeze any assets held by members of the Russian lower house, who voted in favor of recognizing the two regions, and to ban them from traveling to member countries of the bloc.
Banks involved in financing separatist operations in eastern Ukraine will also be targeted, and the two breakaway regions will be excluded from the EU-Ukraine free trade agreement.
The sanctions, which were initially approved by the foreign ministers yesterday, Wednesday, and ratified by the ambassadors this morning, still need to be formally approved by the foreign ministers.
This is usually a standard procedure and the sanctions will take effect as soon as they are published in the EU Official Journal, which is expected to take place later today.
