European football championships, it’s up to women: dates, times, TV (and a song)

One year later the men in Europe and one step away from qualifying for the World where instead the men’s team. As soon as women become professionals, they play European football championships in England. The final, on July 31st, will be played at Wembley where on July 11th a year ago Mancini’s Azzurri won the European Championship (yes, it seems centuries ago).

The tournament

The women’s tournament, the 13th, starts today one year late. It was to be played from 7 July to 1 August 2021, it has been moved to make room for the events skipped in 2020: Men’s European Championships and Olympics.

Excluding Russia, his place was taken by Portugal among the 16 in the field for the group stage (4 for 4 teams) which will be followed by the knockout stage. The first two of each group go to the quarterfinals. Italy is in group D. with France, Iceland and Belgium:

The opening match is England-Austria on 6 July at 21. The groups are:

Group A (Norway, Austria, England, Northern Ireland).
Group B (Germany, Denmark, Finland, Spain).
Group C (Sweden, Portugal, Holland, Switzerland).
Group D (Iceland, France, Italy, Belgium).

Spain, with Alexia Putellas, Barcelona superstar and 2021 golden ball, France, England and Holland, defending champion, are the favorites according to forecasts. For Italy the semifinal would be an excellent result.

Italy

The team led by Milena Bartolini is very similar to that of the 2019 World Cup. In the group they face France and in the quarterfinals they could find one of the group qualifiers with Sweden and the Netherlands. The maximum blue result was a second place. Italy have not made it to the final since 1997, defeated by Germany in the final.
