European leaders want to talk to the US president before the telephone conversation the latter will have with Vladimir Putin, sources from the German government said. According to German media, Chancellor Friedrich Mertz, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Kir Starmer have asked to talk to Donald Trump in the evening, who is scheduled to contact him tomorrow night. The same sources also said that the Chancellor, on the sidelines of Pope Leo 14th, met today in Rome with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski, with whom he discussed him. Mr Mertz did not meet with US Vice President Jay Di Vance, who was also in Rome. “We can only hope that progress will now be achieved,” the Chancellor said. Source: RES
