European Union leaders are divided over whether they should put Ukraine firmly on the path to joining the bloc, a European official said on Wednesday, a day before member states discussed Kiev’s request for speedy membership.
The official, who is preparing for the EU summit in Versailles and spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said all leaders were in favor of strengthening ties with Ukraine.
“But the question is whether they will find a consensus on enlargement, which is sometimes more difficult,” he said.
It is recalled that the President of Ukraine V. Zelensky signed the official request for his country to join the EU on February 28.
