The non-governmental organization “Doctors of the World of Greece” receives the European Citizen Award of the European Parliament, for its response to the humanitarian crisis that followed the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
A total of 30 winners were selected, out of 300 applications submitted. The “Doctors of the World of Greece” are the only winners from Greece.
It is noted that the organization remains at the Romanian border with a mobile health unit, providing first aid and information to refugees. It has also delivered more than 70 tons of humanitarian items. In Greece, Doctors of the World provide psychosocial support, material assistance and information to refugees arriving in the country, while through their open clinics in Athens and Thessaloniki they cover the health care needs of children, women and the elderly.
In a statement, the president of the organization, Hara Tziouvara, points out, among other things, that “we accept this award with great pleasure for the recognition of the work of Doctors of the World for the defense of human rights, care and solidarity.” As he adds, “always faithful to the vision of the organization, we continue to be by the side of those who need it”.
The candidacy of the organization was proposed by the Vice President of the European Parliament, Dimitris Papadimoulis.
The “European Citizen Award” has been instituted by the European Parliament for the recognition of initiatives by individuals or organizations that encourage mutual understanding between people in the EU.
