European Union voters showed clear support for parties supporting Ukraine in the bloc’s parliamentary elections, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Tuesday (11).
“The European elections produced clear results. An overwhelming majority of citizens support parties that also agree that Ukraine should be supported,” said Scholz, alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, at a conference in Berlin.
Ukraine hopes to rally aid to protect and rebuild destroyed cities, as well as continue its efforts to join the European Union as the war drags on.
Kiev hopes the recovery conference will cement its credentials as a future EU member, worthy of huge injections of funding for reconstruction – even as Russian forces continue to make slow advances in eastern Ukraine.
“Reconstructing the country will require massive investments. This will not be possible without private capital. Remember that we are talking about the reconstruction of a future Member State of the European Union”, said Scholz.
Speaking alongside Scholz, Zelenskiy said Russia has already destroyed enough energy infrastructure to power the cities of Berlin and Munich combined.
He had hoped to emerge from the conference with promises of billions of euros for defense and agreements on building a new, more modern energy system.
Asked about what he expects from the next conference in Switzerland, which aims to garner support for Kiev’s peace proposals, Zelenskiy said that the fact that it took place could already be considered something positive, since it was becoming more difficult to keep countries inert to the as the war dragged on.
“This meeting (in itself) is already a result. Because it is very difficult not to lose allies and partner countries. And uniting countries that are partners and non-partners is a difficult mission in itself for Ukraine when the war continues for months,” Zelenskiy said.
Zelenskiy also addressed the German parliament during his visit, where his speech was boycotted by two parties, including the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), whose support surged in the European elections last weekend.
