MEP Roberta Metsola, from Malta, an archipelago in the Mediterranean, secured overwhelming support and became President of the European Parliament this Tuesday (18 January). She is the first woman in the job in 20 years.
Metsola succeeds Italian socialist David Sassoli as head of the European Union’s 705-member parliament. Sassoli died this month, aged 65.
The election for the presidency of the European Parliament was carried out by women. Metsola, 43, defeated two other candidates by securing 458 out of 616 valid votes and taking the first round.
A member of the European Parliament since 2013, Metsola campaigned as a student for Malta to become a member of the European Union.
Parliament, which adopts and amends legislative proposals and decides on the bloc’s budget, has had just two female presidents, Simone Veil and, more recently, Nicole Fontaine, both French, since it became a directly elected assembly in 1979.
