The European press reacted to the presidential debate of CNN in which US President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump faced off.
In the first confrontation of 2024, the candidates discussed the economy, immigration and launched personal attacks against each other.
European news outlets have highlighted the difficult position Democrats are now in, with newspapers and reporters suggesting that party members are calling for Biden to drop out of the race.
British tabloids The Sun, Mirror and Daily Mail were all highly critical of Biden’s performance in the US Debate. CNN, saying it was a “disaster” for the president as he seemed “confused”.
“Disaster for ‘confused’ Biden as he stumbles and freezes during debate with Trump — while top Democrats urge him to step aside,” read the Sun’s headline.
Italian newspapers Ansa and La Repubblica shared an opinion, while other UK newspapers noted that Democrats are now in “severe panic” and “looking for an alternative”.
French newspapers had similar headlines, with Le Monde noting that Biden was “drowning” during the debate. Libération said he had spread “panic”, adding that the debate was “doubly disastrous”.
Greek media outlets also criticized Biden, saying the debate had turned into a referendum on the US president.
“The debate of shame (for Biden)”, headlined the Greek newspaper To Vima.
“It’s time for Biden to leave the race – but how?” asked the Greek newspaper ‘Protagon’.
