European Union requires unconditional withdrawal from Russia to change sanctions

One of the main conditions for the European Union (EU) to suspend or change sanctions against Russia is the withdrawal of all Russian forces from Ukraine, the European Commission said on Wednesday (26).

The United States reached separated agreements on Tuesday (25) with Ukraine and Russia for a ceasefire in the Black Sea and against the targets of the energy sector. On the other hand, the US agreed to work to suspend some sanctions against Moscow.

The EU was not invited to these negotiations. The commission stated that the bloc supports the agreement between the United States and Ukraine.

“The end of unjustified Russian aggression in Ukraine and the unconditional withdrawal of all Russian military forces from all over Ukraine would be one of the main pre-constrictions for altering or suspending sanctions,” said EU spokesman for international affairs and security policy, Anitta Hipper.

Russia said on Tuesday that the United States agreed to help her suspend a series of western sanctions and restrictions on food, fertilizers and transportation as pre-conditioning to a black sea safety agreement.

Diplomats have stressed Reuters that most of the restrictions listed by Kremlin are related to sanctions and restrictions from the European Union.

The European Commission added that the bloc has no sanctions directed to agricultural products, but “prohibitive rates” on Russian and Belarus imported grain products, which came into force on July 1.

Other rates on more agricultural products, as well as about some fertilizers, are still being discussed.

European Union countries renewed sanctions from the bloc against Russia for another six months in late January and this month. Any changes in sanctions require unanimity among their 27 member states.

“Russia should now demonstrate genuine political will to end its war of illegal and unlawful assault,” added hipple.

“Experience has shown that Russia must be judged for its actions, not by its words,” he concluded.
