The European Union expressed concern about the announcement by Donald Trump, president of the United States, that the country will withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), a spokesperson said on Tuesday (21), adding that the bloc expects the decision is still under review.
“We view with concern the announcement of the withdrawal of the WHO by the United States and we trust that the US administration will consider all of this before the formal withdrawal”, said the representative at the European Commission’s daily press conference.
One of the reasons given in the executive order signed by Trump for leaving the WHO is that the body would charge “unfairly burdensome” amounts to the USA.
US leaves the Paris Agreement
Another highlight of the orders signed by the new US president was leaving the Paris Climate Agreement, a document signed by several countries to combat climate change.
Almost 200 nations have committed to keeping global warming below 2°C and ideally below 1.5°C.
Wopke Hoekstra, the European Union’s climate commissioner, said the American president’s decision to leave the agreement was “truly regrettable”.
