The leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Poland agreed on Friday (16) with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, that Russia’s position in peace negotiations was “unacceptable” and also consulted US President Donald Trump, British Prime Minister Keir Stmerer said.
The first direct peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in more than three years occurred in Istanbul on Friday (16).
They lasted well less than two hours, with no apparent sign of progress so far in reducing the distance between the parts, and a Ukrainian source called Moscow’s demands “unviable.”
Stmerer made his comments in a brief joint statement with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, in a summit of the European political community in Tyran, Albania.
Stmerr said leaders met Zelensky – who is also at the summit – to discuss Istanbul’s negotiations and also had a telephone conversation with Trump.
“The Russian position is clearly unacceptable, and not the first time,” said Stmerer.
“And so, as a result of that meeting with President Zelensky and the discussion with President Trump, we are now aligning and closely coordinating our answers and we will continue to do so,” he said.
The leaders did not answer the reporters’ questions.
