Europeans call on Iran to denuclearize

France, Britain and Germany, parties to the Iran nuclear deal, today called on Tehran to opt for de-escalation and “return to full cooperation” with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a day after the multilaterals failed negotiations held in Doha.

“We call on Iran to halt and reverse the escalation of its nuclear program, return to full cooperation with the IAEA, and immediately seize the offer on the table that could benefit its people and state Iran,” French UN ambassador Nicolas de Riviere told the media, flanked by the representatives of Britain and Germany.

“Iran’s nuclear program is now more advanced than at any time in the past,” he added in the joint statement as the UN Security Council was due to hold a regular meeting on the Iranian nuclear file.

“Intensive diplomatic efforts to restore the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as the deal is called, have resulted in a viable deal on the table since early March. We regret that Iran has so far refused to seize this diplomatic opportunity and has continued to its nuclear escalation,” the French ambassador added.

“Unfortunately, as far as we know, at the meeting that ended yesterday in Doha, Iran once again refused to seize the opportunity and instead made new demands” unrelated to the nuclear deal “and unrealistic” , he complained.

Speaking to reporters, Ireland’s UN ambassador Geraldine Byrne Nason, who handles the Iran file at the Security Council, called for all sides to return to talks. “We still believe that all sides should return, like the US of course, to the table” of talks, he said.

The US on Wednesday expressed its “disappointment” with indirect talks with Iran where “no progress” has been made, according to Washington, which considers this round of talks “complete”. Today, however, Iran said it was “determined” to continue the negotiations currently being held indirectly with the US.

At the UN Security Council, China and Russia, the other two parties to the CSTO, stressed the importance of maintaining this agreement. We must “maintain the results achieved,” said Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jun, rejecting “interference” and calling on all sides to avoid any “unilateral measure.”

Recalling that the unilateral withdrawal of the United States in 2018 jeopardized the deal, Russian Deputy UN Ambassador Dmitry Polyansky argued that there was no other “alternative solution” to the deal.

“We must do everything for its revival,” he added, rejecting any exercise of “pressure on Iran.”

Talks began in April 2021 with the goal of the US returning to the deal, which was reached in 2015, and bringing Iran back into full compliance with its commitments as dictated by that deal.
