For the past 3 weeks, the whole world has been moving around the tragedies that are happening in Ukraine and the horror of warhowever there are also events which take place every year such as Eurovision and which try to remain (as much as possible) unaffected by external conditions.
The Ukrainians may not have anything in mind other than the survival of themselves and their country, but the rest of Europe seems to have them very high, even for victory, in this year’s competition to be held in Turin.
It seems that the Europeans are dealing with the song that will represent the homeland of Volodymyr Zelensky in Turin next May, and in fact a lot. This at least proves the fact that in the Eurofans bets the Kalush Orchestra climbed to the first place of the preferences with the song “Stefania”.
The turbulent Ukrainian participation
This year, Ukraine’s participation in Eurovision 2022 went through forty waves. This is because although in the national final, which was organized on February 12, the winner was Alina Pash with the song “Tini zabutykh predkiv” (“in the shadow of the forgotten ancestors”), in the end she is not the one who will go to the international competition. Pash may have come in second in the public vote, but she managed to get the highest score from the jury and eventually be declared the winner of the process, initially getting the ticket to Turin.
That night the side effects were not lacking as the televoting system betrayed the organizers with the presenter announcing the winner on a piece of paper. The state-won Kalush Orchestra in televoting protested against the result. Four days later, Pash withdrew her candidacy as she was accused of entering Crimea from Russian territory in 2015 and forged her travel documents with her team in order to participate in the national final.
And so the Kalush Orchestra advanced to Eurovision 2022.
Who are the Kalush Orchestra?
The three men behind the creation of the Kalush Orchestra in 2019 are rapper Oleh Psiuk, multiplayer Ihor Didenchuk and MC Kylymen. In fact, Didenchuk has experience from the institution of Eurovision, since he went to Rotterdam last year, playing the flute for the song “Go_A”. The band’s first album entitled HOTIN was released in 2021, with Ukrainians adoring it.
Recently, the Kalush Orchestra “grew up”, with three more musicians joining the band. The music they play is a mixture of hip hop with traditional sound. As for the part with which they will now go to Eurovision, contrary to what most may think, it has no political lyrics.
“Stefania” is written in Ukrainian and talks about the child’s relationship with his mother. One of the keywords of the song is “koliskova”, which means “lullaby”. With this word the singer refers to the good memories he has of his mother. At the same time, each rap verse ends with the sentence “Lyuli lyuli lyuli”, which is a classic Slavic lullaby.
