Eurovision 2022: from the conductors to the location, all the hypotheses

It had been at least four years, ever since we were told that Occidentali’s Karma would have made sparks in Kiev, we were thinking about how to organize the Eurovision Song Contest in Italy and now, thanks to the victory of the Måneskin, we can really think about what to invent to make the 66th edition memorable, a bit like the one in Vienna which saw Il Volo come third. In 2022, as required by the regulation, Italy, a member of the “Magic Five”, that is the five countries that founded Eurovision, will host the event, and there are many doubts on the table to be resolved, from the location to the conductors. The first to break the silence was the director of Raiuno Stefano Coletta in an interview with Courier service: «I think that bringing Eurovision back to our country after 31 years will be an opportunity to show Rai’s great ability to drive such a complicated and articulated car. I am aware that for me, for the deputy director Antonio Fasulo and the whole group behind these events, an extraordinary job will begin ». The dates have not yet been formalized – the final could be held on Saturday 21 May and the two semi-finals on Tuesday 17 and Thursday 19 – but, at the moment, it seems that the most important issue to deal with is that of the host city.

«Sanremo is set up between May and June. The priority is that, then we will immediately move on to Eurovision. After all, it is Sanremo itself that has inspired the European competition. I think whoever wins the Festival will be the expression of what we will do »continued Coletta who imagined Rome “as the riverbed city of this manifestation”. The hypotheses, however, are many: to come forward among the candidacies was the city of Sanremo itself which, however, does not have an indoor building with a capacity of 12 thousand people and a height of 20/30 meters as required. by the Eurovision regulation. We therefore speak of the Mediolanum Forum in Milan, which hosted several X Factor, but also of Palasport Olimpico in Turin which remains, to date, the largest indoor arena in Italy, with a total capacity ranging from 13 thousand to 15 thousand people (the structure was reported by the deputy director of Raiuno Fasulo in the event of a possible victory for Francesco Gabbani).

And if the idea ofArena of Verona was nipped in the bud just for not respecting the standard fees provided by the Contest, the other big dilemma on which the spectators struggle is that linked to the conduction. The name of the broad agreements, the one that everyone seems to agree on, is that of Alessandro Cattelan who, in addition to having managed great live events, is also very knowledgeable with English (the conduction of Eurovision, in fact, will not be in Italian). For the same reason, someone also spoke of Victoria Cabello and Camila Raznovich, while we add Milly Carlucci, a Rai professional who speaks English very well and would secure the “over” quota. The most optimistic dream of a possible conduct of Chiara Ferragni – quite unlikely – but also a short trip to Raffaella Carrà who, beyond the speech of the language, is also one of the most famous Italian faces abroad, not to mention that, in 2011, it was she who supported Italy’s return to Eurovision in competition with Raphael Gualazzi. In short, however it goes, the organizational machine has begun, and it will be an honor to host the event in our country both from an economic point of view (the consequences related to Covid will be felt for a long time) and to demonstrate to the rest of the country. Europe of what we are capable of.
