Eurozone GDP slows in Q4 on weakness in Germany

Eurozone economic growth slowed in the fourth quarter of 2021 against the previous three months as expected, according to data released on Monday, but still posted strong annual expansion as France and Italy performed well. offset a much weaker quarter in Germany.

The European Union’s statistics agency, Eurostat, said in a preliminary estimate that the Gross Domestic Product of the 19 countries that use the euro grew by 0.3% in the fourth quarter over the previous three months, registering a gain of 4.6% compared to the previous year. same period of the previous year.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected a 0.3% quarterly increase and a 4.7% year-on-year increase as the economy continues to recover from lockdowns caused by waves of the coronavirus pandemic.

France, the euro zone’s second-largest economy, saw quarterly growth of 0.7% in the fourth quarter and expansion of 5.4% year-on-year, while Italy saw increases of 0.6% and 6.4% respectively.

Germany, the region’s largest economy, owes the weakest performance, with a contraction of 0.7% quarter-on-quarter and growth of just 1.4% year-on-year.

Eurostat estimated that eurozone GDP for the whole of 2021 grew by 5.2% compared to 2020, based on seasonally and calendar-adjusted quarterly data.
