Eurozone: Retail sales fell in June

Eurozone retail sales fell in June as consumers continued to cut back on purchases amid a rally in inflation.

In particular, the volume of retail trade fell by 1.2% in June in the Eurozone and by 1.3% in the EU. compared to May, according to the initial estimate announced today by Eurostat.

In May the volume of retail trade had increased by 0.4% in the Eurozone and by 0.2% in the EU.

Compared to June 2021, retail sales fell 3.7% in the euro area and 2.8% in the EU. according to the data of the European statistical services.

Among the Member States for which data are available, the largest monthly declines were recorded in Denmark (-3.8%), the Netherlands (-3.4%) and Estonia (-2.4%).

Increases were recorded in Ireland and Malta (+0.5% both), Finland (+0.3%) and Austria (+0.2%). Eurostat did not provide data on the course of sales in Greece.
