Eurozone: Retail sales growth exceeded expectations in November

Eurozone retail sales exceeded expectations in November, thanks to in-store non-food purchases, as shown by Eurostat data on Friday, indicating that consumer demand remained strong despite new pandemic restrictions.

In particular, retail sales rose 1% in November, dampening expectations for a 0.5% drop in a Reuters poll among analysts.

On an annual basis, retail sales expanded by 7.8%, well above forecasts of 5.6%, according to the European Union’s statistical office.

Non-food sales increased by 1.6% per month, while car fuel sales decreased by 1.5%.

Among the bloc’s largest countries, Spain and France performed above average, while Germany was a brake on the expansion of retail trade.
