Eurozone: Retail sales increased, lower than expected

Eurozone retail sales rose in October but were lower than expected, according to Eurostat.

Retail sales volume rose 0.2% in October from a month earlier, following a downwardly revised 0.4% decline in September, according to Eurostat.

Economists expected a 0.3% increase in October.

Eurostat states that sales increased by 1.3% on a monthly basis for car fuels and 0.4% for non-food products, while sales decreased by 0.1% for food, beverages and tobacco.

On an annual basis, the volume of retail sales in October increased by 1.4%, according to Eurostat.

The short-term outlook for retail sales has been overshadowed by the rise in coronavirus cases across Europe, and the spread of the new variant, Omicron.
