Unemployment in the eurozone fell more than expected in January as the labor market recovery continued despite supply chain problems, rising prices and rising coronavirus cases.
Unemployment stood at 6.8% in January from 7% in December, according to data from the European Union’s statistical office.
Estimates spoke of a 7% index.
The number of people registered as unemployed in the eurozone fell by 214,000 in January compared to the previous month, to 11.2 million.
Youth unemployment fell to 13.9% in January from 14.2% in December, Eurostat said.
The figures do not include employees in government support programs.
These programs, which have reduced the impact of the pandemic on the region’s labor market, cover a large portion of the wages of workers in companies that have been forced to cut their operations as a result of the pandemic.
