Even cars can be six-wheelers! Found 10 unusual models

Of course, we are all used to seeing cars with four wheels. When it comes to six-wheeled models, large trucks immediately come to mind. However, three axles can also be used in passenger cars. These most often include plus or minus piece copies. SUVs need an extra pair of wheels to increase their flotation. For everyone else, it will come in handy to increase maximum speed, ride or just stability on the road. Nevertheless, there is a generally non-obvious example – the creation of a unique car that does not look like anything traditional. You should not forget about such models either.

Panther 6 (1970)

Robert Jankel, who founded Panther Cars, is responsible for the creation of this car. The unique model received an 8.3-liter engine for 600 horses and a top speed of 320 km/h. The vehicle surprised not only outside, but also inside. As for the 1970s, it was even too much outright premium and modern technology: TV, phone, cool seats and great finishes. At the Motorfair-1977 exhibition in London, the car made a real splash. However, it was too expensive – even taking into account its uniqueness. Actually, therefore, this miracle of engineering thought was not particularly popular at all.

▶︎ Fact: surprisingly, only two cars were produced and sold. One has long been in the private collection of an Arab sheikh. The latest news about the second is the sale at the Bonhams auction in 2011. He managed to get a little more than 40 thousand dollars for it, which is simply ridiculous for such a unique and rare vehicle.

Tyrrell P34 (1976)

This model did not claim the premium segment. She needed an extra pair of wheels in a purely racing matter. The car was created for Formula 1. The place of one pair of traditional wheels in front was taken by two pairs of a smaller diameter. Thus, engineer Derek Gardner wanted to reduce air resistance and increase the contact patch with the roadway. The machine, by the way, was quite successful, which inspired many other engineers. However, in the early 1980s, the racing authorities banned cars with three wheel axles from participating in competitions. On this, the history of this direction has actually sunk into oblivion.

Sbarro Windhawk 6×6 (1978)

A real heavy suite by designer Franco Sbarro. He, by the way, is well known to those interested in automotive topics with a number of unique vehicles that have always deserved the closest attention. This model received a 7.2-meter body and an 8.2-liter engine for 210 horses. The interior decoration was very rich: leather, wood, the most modern technology. Many called this vehicle a real home on wheels. However, it seemed more that this was not a house, but an office in which, during a move somewhere, purely multimillion-dollar contracts should be signed. The first customer was Joseph Ajaj, the owner of the premium watch brand from Saudi Arabia TAG Heuer.

▶︎ Fact: in total, it was planned to produce two dozen such cars for the richest customers, mainly from Saudi Arabia. However, except for Joseph Azhadzha, no one became the happy owner of this vehicle. It is difficult to say why this happened.

Citroen CX Tissier Loadrunner (1981)

It’s amazing when both incredibly expensive and unique six-wheeled cars and quite practical examples of using three axles at once are found side by side in the same material. This includes this instance, which was supposed to be something between a relatively fast passenger car and a delivery truck. This vehicle was originally intended to be used for fast delivery of newspapers and other correspondence. Passenger vehicles lacked the carrying capacity for this, and specialized models did not differ in the necessary speed. In order to inexpensively deliver parcels over long distances, the car was equipped with a diesel power plant. To further reduce fuel consumption, the body was made of fiberglass.

Dodge Ram T-Rex 6×6 (1997)

One of the first relatively massive six-wheeled pickups on the market. An additional axle with a pair of wheels was added to this car not out of a desire to stand out – firstly, it was needed to increase cross-country ability, and secondly, with the help of it, it was possible to increase the maximum load capacity, which was quite important for a pickup truck. The car used an 8-liter engine from Viper, which turned out to be more than enough to simultaneously rotate 6 wheels at once. When compared to models that used twin wheels on the rear axle, it turned out to be more maneuverable and behaved much better off-road. In general, the model was the most successful from all points of view. And what it looked like!

▶︎ Fact: sorry, but the car never made it to mass production. Apparently, the new format of the car frankly frightened potential buyers. After analyzing the market, the company realized that they didn’t particularly want to buy their new creation even in Texas, where, as you know, they have a special love for huge cars in general and pickup trucks in particular.

Covini C6W (2004)

A unique supercar with two wheels in the front. There is a feeling that the creator of this car, Ferruccio Covini, was inspired by the Tyrrell P34 model, which has already been given attention above in the text. By the way, he wanted to achieve exactly the same thing: to increase the contact patch with the roadway and improve handling. Moreover, he wanted the car to be able to stop as quickly as possible from high speeds, for which another pair of wheels was also not superfluous. By the way, the supercar was equipped with a German 4.2-liter engine for 440 horses, so it definitely had the potential for fast driving. It is curious that a whole scattering of well-known car brands, from Brembo to Pirelli, actively helped the engineer in the construction of the car. The car was presented at the Geneva Motor Show, but in the end it did not become especially popular because of its unusualness.

Bureko (2010)

When I first saw this car, I immediately thought that its creators simply remade the Hummer. Did you also catch yourself on this thought? However, this is a mistake. In fact, the basis of the model – unexpectedly – was the Chevrolet Silverado. Moreover, the company that created it is not located in the United States or the Emirates, where fossil fuels flow like water, but in the Czech Republic. The manufacturer completes this monster with a 6.2-liter engine, the return on which can be completely different – from 600 to 1200 horses. The body is made of carbon fiber, so a huge external car with a length of about 6 meters weighs just over 2.7 kg.

▶︎ Fact: the car has a rather interesting all-wheel drive scheme. 6 × 6 is not always turned on – an additional axle is connected only after activating a special off-road mode. If you move along the highway, a 4 × 4 scheme is used – this is necessary to save fuel, which already emphasizes the European approach.

Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG 6×6 (2013)

Probably the most famous six-wheeled car. Few even saw him live, but almost every fan of the topic definitely looked at the pictures. This is a very cool and incredibly passable premium SUV, which is very expensive. Interestingly, most orders for it were not only in the Emirates, but also in Russia. For customers, the car was equipped with a 5.5-liter AMG engine for 544 horses. Up to a hundred, a giant weighing 3.7 tons accelerated in less than 6 seconds. The vehicle had all the components necessary for tough off-road. However, it is hard to believe that most machines are used for their intended purpose.

Patriot Campers LC79 Megatourer (2017)

A car from Australia, the origin of which should not cause dissonance, because the entire continent consists, to a greater extent, of difficult deserts. This miracle was created on the basis of the eternal Toyota Land Cruiser 79, which enjoys the highest respect among off-road lovers. The main feature of the model is a completely redesigned chassis, which makes it possible to change the ride height and other nuances of movement. Moreover, additional equipment, which is designed for survival in the most difficult conditions, deserves special attention. It includes several batteries, solar panels, and a 70-liter clean water tank.

▶︎ Fact: apparently, the creators of this vehicle focus on the needs of hunters. This is clearly hinted at by the 60-liter freezer built into the SUV. Big game won’t fit in there, but something medium sized is easy.

ASC International FZE Hornet 6×6 (2018)

This six-wheeled SUV was created specifically for the army. It is based on the Toyota Hilux, which is justified by the need for an automatic transmission, which is not available for the same Land Cruiser 70, which is actively used for such transformations. However, it is generally quite difficult to recognize the base car in this monster: the similarity can be traced only in the rear optics and a little in the front of the body. The car is also interesting in the use of a pair of transfer cases, which correctly divide the thrust between all six wheels. Under the hood, by the way, is a 4-liter engine, and the wheels have automatic pumping.
