Even in 1st place in the previews of Argentina, Milei says he was robbed at the polls

The ultra-rightist Javier Milei claimed in Argentina that he was robbed at the polls during the primaries of the presidential elections, which took place last Sunday (13). According to the presidential candidate, who led the poll, he would have done 5% more than the final result indicated. The statement was given in an interview with La Nación on Wednesday (16).

“I had 30%, but if there had been no fraud, I would have had 35%,” he said. Asked if he had evidence of the prosecution, he said that a person on his team had studies that pointed to this scenario. However, he did not come forward with these alleged withdrawals.

The open, simultaneous and obligatory Primaries (Paso) define the candidates for the elective offices of each party to dispute the general elections — that is, that they will dispute the Presidency and other positions of the Legislature — on October 22nd.

To contest the election, candidates need to be the most voted of their parties. When the party only launches a single candidate, as was the case with Liberdade Avança, by Milei, the candidate is required to cast at least 1.5% of votes to go to the election.

Election polls indicated that Milei, from the extreme right, would get about 20% of the votes, behind the government candidate, from the left, and the center-right opposition. However, he surprised, leading the primaries, with 30% of the vote.

Now, Milei is seen as a candidate who, unlike what the polls predicted, has a great chance of going to the second round and, eventually, becoming president of Argentina.

General elections

Since the end of 2016, it has been established in Argentina that candidates approved in the primaries must participate in two televised debates . They will take place between the 1st and 8th of October. One of these debates must be held in a provincial capital determined by the National Electoral Chamber (CNE).

In case of a second round, there will be one more instance of debate between the two candidates, on November 12th.
