Despite the uncertainty regarding the epidemiological scenario in Brazil and the cancellation of Carnival in 24 capitals and the Federal District, representatives of the events sector are optimistic and are betting on the resumption of 100% of the programming in the coming months.
According to the Brazilian Association of Event Promoters (Abrape), the expectation is that 590,000 events will be held by the end of this year, across the country.
Responsible for 4.32% of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the sector suffered losses in the last two years. The area, which before the pandemic generated 23 million jobs, lost more than 450,000 jobs and lost about BRL 140 billion in revenue in 2021.
According to Abrape, more than 530,000 events, such as concerts, parties, congresses, sporting and social events, theater, among others, were not held last year due to Covid-19.
In the city of Rio de Janeiro, more than 80 congresses, fairs and symposia are scheduled for the coming months, in addition to national and international sporting events, such as the Davis Cup, a men’s tennis tournament, and the cycling competitions, Le Tour de France. and Grand Fund.
For the month of June, considered low season, two major events are planned that promise to move the capital of Rio de Janeiro. On the 11th, 200,000 people are expected at Esperança Rio, a gospel meeting, to be held on Copacabana beach.
On the 18th and 19th, the Rio Marathon takes place, which brings together 35,000 street runners. The hotel chain estimates it will reach about 90% occupancy in this period alone. According to the vice president of HotéisRIO, José Domingo Bouzon, the events are of great importance for the hotel sector.
“It is a significant milestone in the events calendar and brings a lot of return in terms of room rates and occupancy. The hotel sector needs to recognize and value the importance of this event, which moves thousands of people”.
For the months of September and October, the bet is to hold a mega music festival, with more than a thousand musical attractions. The event usually attracts more than 500,000 people from various parts of the country. According to Fundação Getúlio Vargas, the festival’s economic impact on the city is R$ 1.7 billion.
To help state and municipal governments make decisions related to the return of the culture and entertainment events sector throughout Brazil, Abrape launched an unprecedented platform, called Radar Eventos.
The method is similar to that used for the same purpose in the US and UK.
The methodology works as follows: data on the total volume of vaccinated persons and projections of new daily deaths until December 2021 in the country are cross-referenced on Radar.
Based on the impact of the increase in immunization on the drop in the number of cases and victims, an index of three deaths per million inhabitants is established as a reference to guarantee the safe and immediate resumption of events.
Juridical insecurity
Representatives of the events and tourism sectors are still awaiting the reissue of Provisional Measure 1036/21, which established rules for the cancellation of shows, festivals and other agendas due to the increase in cases of covid-19 in the country.
The MP, which exempted companies from reimbursing consumers as long as they ensured the rescheduling of services, expired in December 2021 and companies in the segment fear further losses.
