Every third new smartphone on the market is equipped with a MediaTek processor

Analysts from the Counterpoint Research research company spoke about the state of affairs in the global mobile chipset market in the fourth quarter of 2021. According to their calculations, global shipments of processors for smartphones in the last three months of last year increased by 5% compared to the same period in 2020. Moreover, 5G-enabled platforms accounted for almost half of the total shipments.

The Taiwanese company MediaTek remains the leading manufacturer of mobile chipsets for a quarter in a row. Its share in the fourth quarter accounted for 33% of the total supply. Interestingly, compared to the fourth quarter of 2020, MediaTek’s share decreased by 4 percentage points, from 37%. Analysts attribute this to the fact that many smartphone manufacturers bought mobile chips for future use in the first half of the year, fearing a shortage of supplies due to the crisis in the semiconductor industry.

The second largest manufacturer of mobile processors remains the American chip maker Qualcomm. Now it controls 30% of the world market against 23% a year earlier. Apple closes the top three. Its A-series processors account for 21% of the market, down 1 percentage point from a year ago. The share of Exynos processors has fallen from 7% to 4% over the same period, while the share of Hisilicon, Huawei’s proprietary processors, has fallen from 7% to 1%. But Unisoc was able to increase the supply of chips. If at the end of 2020 it occupied 4%, then a year later it was able to get an 11% market share.
