Everyone condemns the blocking of Twitter in Nigeria, Trump congratulates

Nigerian government’s move to ban Twitter’s international outcry, with the exception of the former US president Donald Trump who gave his congratulations.

Trump, who has been banned from using the platform for life, praised the stance of the government of President Muhammadu Buhari in a statement issued on Tuesday.

“Congratulations to the Nigerian country (sic), which has just banned it Twitter “because it banned its President”, he stated, as broadcast by AMPE.

“Other countries should also ban Twitter and Facebook because they do not allow you to express yourself openly and freely “, he continued and added “Maybe I should have done it when I was president.”

The Nigerian government announced last Friday that it was suspending access to Twitter indefinitely because of “using the platform for subversive activities”.

The access ban was registered a few 24 hours after the site’s administrators deleted a post by President Bukhari and suspended his account for 12 hours.

The decision to delete the tweet was “disappointing”, but was not the only reason access was denied, Mr Bukhari himself said, adding that the measure was temporary but did not specify when it would be lifted.

The Twitter address stated that the ban caused it “Deep concern” and that it will work to “restore access for all those who rely” on the platform in Nigeria “to communicate and connect with the world”.

“Access to free and open internet is a fundamental right in modern society,” he added.

Several organizations, including the Nigerian Bar Association, are preparing to go to court if the government of Mahamadou Bukhari does not lift the ban on access to the site. Amnesty International has called on the Nigerian government to lift the ban. The United States, the European Union and Canada have all condemned the ban.
