Everything sold out: the next VW electric cars will be available only in 2023

The global shortage of semiconductors has hit hard, including the automotive industry – many companies cannot produce as many vehicles as they would like. And yesterday, May 4, Volkswagen management also officially announced that due to the lack of key components and high demand for electric vehicles of the brand and its subsidiaries, it will not be possible to satisfy the needs of potential buyers in the US and Europe in this segment this year. In addition, apparently, the difference between demand and real supply is simply catastrophic.

The fact is that the manufacturer announced the collection of more than 300 thousand pre-orders for its cars only in the region of Western Europe. This is a huge figure, especially considering that the information publication Ars Technica reports 99,000 sold electric cars of all brands of the concern (Porsche, Audi, Skoda and Volkswagen) in the first quarter of this year. Accordingly, at the current pace, the German giant will sell about 400,000 vehicles per year with pre-orders in the region alone in the amount of 300,000. Moreover, initially Volkswagen management planned to sell 700,000 electric vehicles per year – apparently, even the company’s forecasts turned out to be underestimated against the backdrop of growing demand.

Herbert Diess, CEO of the Volkswagen Group, said that this year the electric cars of subsidiaries and Volkswagen itself sold very well, but the supply quotas for the US and Europe have already been set. This means that all buyers who are interested in buying an electric vehicle from the German automotive giant will have to wait until at least 2023. However, no one guarantees that at the beginning of next year there will be enough electric vehicles for everyone, because the lion’s share of buyers this year will not receive their new products.
