The Ministry of Digital Development, Telecommunications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation (Mintsifry of Russia) announced good news for mobile subscribers in Russia and Belarus – from April 1, fees for incoming roaming calls between the two countries have been completely cancelled.
The decision was made on March 23 at a meeting of a high-level group of the Council of Ministers of the Union State. The implementation of the project was entrusted to the Ministry of Digital Development of Russia and the Ministry of Communications of Belarus. Now the Russian Ministry of Digital Transformation has announced that all the necessary work has been done, and on April 1, charges for incoming calls in roaming will no longer be charged.
Thus, Russians will be able to receive free calls on the territory of Belarus, and vice versa.
As the press service of the Ministry of Digital Development notes, this is an important result of the plan to implement the resolution of the Supreme State Council, signed on December 20, 2019.
Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Chernyshenko commented on the event:
A lot of preparatory work has been done by the relevant ministries and mobile operators. Thanks to this, Russians in Belarus will be able to receive calls from relatives for free. Similar conditions will apply to Belarusian subscribers in Russia. And it is very symbolic that this decision comes into force on the eve of the Day of Unity of our Peoples, which is celebrated annually on April 2.”
Dmitry Kim, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Digital Development of Russia, clarified that the work of regulators has not been completed on this. In the future, it is planned to cancel all extra charges for roaming between Russia and Belarus:
We are now continuing to work with the Republic to eliminate all roaming charges in the near future. Then the cost of incoming and outgoing calls when moving between countries for citizens will be equal to the cost of communication within their country.”
