Evo Morales is investigated for human trafficking for alleged relationship with a minor

The former president of Bolivia Evo Morales is being investigated for human trafficking for alleged sexual relations with a minor, who ended up pregnant. He denies the accusation.

The current Bolivian president, Luis Arce, confirmed, this Thursday (5), that his government will be one of the authors of the case against his predecessor, but asked for confidentiality in the investigations to preserve the minor involved in the case.

“Our government identifies a lot with children. We do not agree with this type of situation, it cannot be that they go unpunished when there is an investigation, that the corresponding culpability is found, whoever it may be. Don’t mess with children,” he said.

The investigation against Morales came to light on Wednesday (2) after prosecutor Sandra Gutiérrez reported that she was removed from the Tarija Departmental Prosecutor’s Office after asking for the former president’s arrest.

The country’s Attorney General’s Office said, in turn, that the dismissal was due to procedural inconsistencies and announced the formation of a commission of specialized prosecutors to investigate the case.

The teenager involved in the case would have had a daughter, aged 15, registered in Morales’ name.

The former president denies the accusations, and says that since he held marches against the current government, four cases have been opened against him. He also said that the case involving the minor had already been investigated in 2020 and was archived.

“They investigated and there was nothing. And there will be nothing, it’s another lie”, said Morales, at a press conference. According to him, the case is being used politically to damage his image amid the conflict with Arce.
