Evo Morales is summoned to a hearing on charges of human trafficking

A judge in Tarija, Bolivia, summoned former president Evo Morales to a hearing on the human trafficking case opened against him, the Bolivian Information Agency (ABI) reported on Friday (27). Morales rejected the accusations.

The former president was summoned to appear on January 14th at 9:30 am (local time) before the Judge of Criminal Investigation, Anti-Corruption and Against Violence against Women of Tarija, Nelson Alberto Rocabado, to process the request for precautionary measures

It is expected that, during this hearing, the judge will decide whether Morales will face the case against him in freedom or in pre-trial detention.

THE CNN Spanish contacted Morales’ team to comment on the subpoena and ask if he would appear, and is awaiting a response.

The former president rejects the accusations against him and claims that he is the target of a “judicial war”.

According to Morales, President Luis Arce is behind these actions to prevent him from participating in the 2025 presidential elections, something the president denies.

Tarija’s departmental prosecutor, Sandra Gutiérrez, announced this month that she had formally charged Morales with human trafficking to the detriment of a minor, and that an arrest warrant had been issued for him.

Bolivian Government Minister Eduardo del Castillo said days later that a migration alert would be issued against Morales to prevent him from leaving the country, according to the ABI at the time.
