Ex-boyfriend confirms that accused of poisoning elderly caregiver was jealous of victim

The sister of Lindaci Viegas Batista de Carvalho, who died of poisoning after eating a candy in Rio de Janeiro, was the first witness to be heard this Friday afternoon (20), at the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice.

Lenice Viegas Batista said that she was aware of the threats that Lindaci, 54 years old, had been receiving from the accused, Susane Martins da Silva. According to her, at the time of the crime, her sister was no longer involved with Susane’s ex-boyfriend, but even so, the accused was jealous.

Appointed as the pivot of the crime, Mário Sérgio Gravital told the court that he dated Susane for around a year and a half, but that the relationship ended in November 2022 because the defendant was enraged when she saw a message from the victim on his cell phone.

Mário Sérgio said that Lindaci had also told him about the threats, but that the two believed that “they were word of mouth” and would pass.

The elderly caregiver’s youngest son also reported that his mother had already commented on threats. The 16-year-old boy also added that he even tried a small piece of chocolate when he arrived at the hospital where his mother was taken and was surprised by the texture, suspecting that it had pellets, and warned about suspicion.

The court also heard eight other witnesses in this first hearing and Susane’s trial. In addition to the victim’s relatives, a civil police officer and two friends of the accused testified.

The crime took place on May 20th. According to the Civil Police, the victim ate poisoned chocolates that had been delivered by a motorcycle courier on her birthday and then fell ill.

She was taken to the Federal Hospital of Andaraí, in the north of Rio de Janeiro, but arrived at the unit dead.

According to the testimony of the victim’s eldest son, already in the hospital, while waiting for news from Lindaci, they noticed that there was “a strange ball” in the chocolate.

“At the hospital they gave us my mother’s things and, inside the bag, there was a package with chocolates. My brother went to eat and noticed the ball. At that moment, we informed hospital security and began to suspect poisoning,” said the 17-year-old boy.

The motorcycle courier who made the delivery, Lucas David Bernardes Borges, was also heard at the hearing. He revealed that he received R$100 from a young man to deliver a bouquet of flowers and chocolates in Vila Isabel.

“The place was a glass shop. As Lindaci wasn’t there, I left it with a man. I never met her in person. On Monday night, I started receiving threats over the phone. On Tuesday morning, I saw the report on television, connected the facts and went to the police station,” she reported.

The investigation and trial hearing in the case will continue in December, with the hearing of a defense witness and the interrogation of the defendant. Susane has been in prison since May 24th and is responsible for double homicide, caused by poisoning and a futile motive, corruption of minors and illegal possession of a firearm.
