In April 2023, after the disclosure of reports of cursed clients online, João Ricardo Rangel Mendes resigned as CEO. In a letter released at the time, Mendes acknowledged his mistakes and stated that the removal aimed to separate his personal image from the company. He mentioned his mother’s death as a factor that contributed to his aggressive behavior.
The request for resignation took place in a period of increasing consumer dissatisfaction, which reported reservation cancellations in hotels and inns due to the company’s financial problems. Videos and prints of conversations on social networks have exposed Mendes’ aggressive behavior with clients, including the dissemination of personal data and cursing.
On April 17, the Ministry of Tourism canceled the registration of the company HURB in register, which prevents it from operating in the tourist sector. The decision was motivated by allegations of non -compliance and a large volume of consumer complaints in the administrative and judicial spheres.
The National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) also determined that HURB would present detailed information about its financial situation, including the number of outstanding contracts and the total amount due to the affected clients. Senacon considered the company’s performance operational, technical and financially, after 12 months of attempts to agree.
In a public statement, HURB claimed to have been surprised by the Ministry of Tourism measure, classifying it as “more political than technical” and accusing Senacon of abandoning negotiations. Currently the HURB website is down.
