A former Kazakh finance minister was sentenced to 24 years in prison today for the murder of his wife, after a trial that attracted much attention as some saw it as a litmus test of the country's new president's promise to strengthen rights of the women. Quandik Bisibaev, 44, was found guilty of torturing and murdering his wife. His trial, which has been televised live for the past seven weeks, was widely seen as an attempt by authorities to send a message that the country's elite are no longer above the law. CCTV footage shown at the trial shows Bishibaev repeatedly punching 31-year-old Saltanat Nukenova and dragging her by the hair, half-naked, into the room where she later died.
