A federal court today sentenced former far-right Proud Boys leader Joseph Biggs to 17 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of seditious conspiracy for the January 6, 2021, attack on Capitol of the USA.
The prosecutors had asked for a sentence of 33 years for Biggs and 30 years for his co-defendant, Zachary Rellwhose sentence will be announced later today.
Shortly before his sentence was announced, biggs begged federal judge timothy kelly not to sentence him to so many years in prison. “I got carried away by the crowd and just moved forward. My curiosity got the better of me. I’m not a terrorist. I have no hatred in my heart,” he said.
The longest sentence handed down to date for the Capitol attack is the 18 years Oath Keepers founder Stuart Rhodes was sentenced to last May. Two other members, the organization’s former president Enrique Tario and Ethan Nordin, were due to learn their sentences on Wednesday but the hearing was postponed due to the judge’s illness.
The aim of the attack was to prevent Congress from ratifying Joe Biden’s victory in the November 2020 election. Five people, including a police officer, were killed during or shortly after the riots, and more than 140 police officers were injured. The Capitol building suffered millions of dollars in damage.
