Ex-Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn’s “dieselgate” trial begins

Former Volkswagen chief executive Martin Winterkorn appeared in court today to face fraud charges in the so-called “dieselgate scandal”, nine years after the German carmaker was found to have falsified emissions test results. Winterkorn, who was ousted from the company leadership in September 2015 after it emerged that software in millions of Volkswagen vehicles had been manipulated to meet environmental standards, became the public face of the scandal, the biggest in the company’s history. Today marked the start of the 77-year-old’s criminal trial, the culmination of a case authorities have been investigating for more than five years. The trial comes as the future of Volkswagen’s facilities in Germany is in doubt as the carmaker seeks to save billions of euros.
