The substitution of diesel with biomethane – biofuel produced from biogas processing – in cargo transportation is economically viable, said copersucar president Tomás Manzano. According to the executive, Biomethane is already a reality in Brazil.
“This is not something to be developed in a few years. It’s already reality today. Economically viable, with current and current technology and is in full development,” he said.
The statement was made during the “CNN Talks: COP30 – The Key to the Future”. The event begins the coverage of CNN Brazil of the 30th Climate Conference, which will be held from November 10 to 21, in Belém (PA).
During the event, Manzano pointed out that the cargo transport matrix in Brazil is dependent on the road modal, which mainly uses diesel.
“We have the opportunity to use sugarcane waste to produce another product, which is biomethane, which can replace diesel oil for road transport,” he said.
According to Manzano, the Brazilian biofuels market is quite mature, with a modern and efficient industry. In the president’s assessment, Brazil is able to replicate its product production and distribution model in other countries.
“Brazil’s experience with COP is an opportune time to demonstrate and present the crucial role of biofuels to the energy transition,” said Manzano.
Market data show who ethanol emits less than one third of CO₂ by Megajoule compared to fossil fuels. While the sugarcane derivative generates 24 to 28g of CO₂/MJ, gasoline, diesel and other fossil fuels generate an average of 90g of CO₂/MJ.
Only in the copersucar operation, the use of ethanol allows to avoid the emission of about 37 million tons of CO₂ per year, reinforcing the strategic role of this biofuel to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
The company’s president also pointed out that sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) based on ethanol is the most competitive in the market, when taken into consideration, especially the possibility of scale. In addition, according to Manzano, ethanol -based fuel is a very low carbon intensity solution when compared to aviation kerosene.
“We have a combination of an efficient agricultural sector with high productivity with a portfolio of very low carbon intensity products, supported by a very robust, modern and innovative regulatory environment, with programs that will support this growth over time,” he said.

Under the leadership of Brazilian diplomacy, the expectation is that COP boosts negotiations on climate financing, energy transition, preservation of the Amazon and compliance with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
In November, a CNN Brazil team, including anchors, analysts and reporters, will be in the capital of Pará.
CNN Brazil will have its own HQ on site, the Casa Cop30 house, in a noble area of Belém. The space foresees tailored hospitality for networking, content production and experiences, such as interviews, brunches, dinners and Happy Hours.
