The use of drones has transformed the battlefield in Ukraine, becoming a crucial device for both sides in the war.
A CNN accompanied a Kiev secret service mission, which sent a drone to a Russian-occupied area.
Through the device — which, at first glance, looks a lot like a toy — it was possible to identify, for example, equipment hidden in a small forest.

And each time it flies, the drone records valuable information, such as the state of Russian defenses, vehicles and systems being deployed.
Guided by the pilot “Pixel”, the device travels beyond the front line of Zaporizhzhia, in search of a Russian anti-aircraft defense system, flying towards a city that is one of the main objectives of the southern counter-offensive: Tokmak.
On the other side of the communication, and looking at the same screen, a Himars missile unit is ready for launch. “You can see Russian vehicles moving on the road”, points out Bankir, the drone commander’s nom de guerre, also signaling an enemy checkpoint.
But that night, the drone pilots were out of luck. The air defense system they wanted to target was no longer in the indicated location.
Positioned in a field about 15 kilometers north of the front line and using only red lights to avoid detection, they have a panoramic view of the battle and what is happening beyond.
“We have been looking for them for some time. We had some results. We know where they hide, where they move, so it’s only a matter of time before we find them”, said Bankir.
The soldier points out that he will fight until every inch of Ukrainian territory is liberated, no matter how long that takes.
