Exclusive: Former Russian detainee tells CNN of war terrors

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Russia has sent around 15,000 men who were recruited from the country’s prisons to fight on the front lines. With inadequate training and combat inexperience, many are dying or returning home seriously injured. The correspondent of CNN , Nick Walsh, spoke exclusively with a survivor, and the mother of one of the soldiers who was killed days after being deployed to war. For security reasons, the names of the interviewees have been changed.

Russia is often cruel to its citizens. In a darker fate, detainees are recruited by the Ministry of Defense, basically to be cannon fodder. The battalions called “Storm Z” have very high death rates.

These are two rare stories – one of survival and one of a quick death, told to the CNN at great risk, from within Russia.

Ex-con Sergei barely made it back. Today, he has two jobs… and can’t sleep because of the ringing in his ears from the bombs.
