Doing physical exercises before surgery helps in the recovery process, indicates a study published last Wednesday (12).
There was a 56% drop in postoperative complications for those who practiced some physical activity, according to the analysis, published in the scientific journal Surgery. Hospital stays were also shorter.
The cases of 832 patients who underwent high-intensity training preoperatively, followed by a postoperative recovery process, were analyzed.
Researcher Kari Clifford, from the University of Otago, New Zealand, said that the study included several types of major surgery (liver, lung, abdominal, among others), and that the average age of research participants was between 66 and 67 years.
“We found that high-intensity interval training is safe and effective for surgical patients. A training program can significantly improve a patient’s physical condition within four to six weeks, and this reduces postoperative complications and length of stay,” says Clifford.
