Expat: the guide to saving (of gigabytes and money)

We know that the Internet is essential, so check if your current tariff allows you to use it abroad too.

Be careful that the gigabytes may be reduced when you leave Italy! You can also consider getting high an online international eSIM. In fact, there are many local, regional or global options and with different durations ranging from a few days to several months.

To save some internet before departure download the maps of the city where you will go offline, directly from the app. This way you can always have it at hand and receive all the directions to go wherever you want without using Giga.

A couple of tips: remember to include the airport in the downloaded map area because sometimes it is very far from the city center. And before leaving, once you have downloaded the map, disconnect the Internet and check that the directions, especially those of the vehicles, work correctly.

Also remember then bring the physical card always with you. Even though we are all now used to paying with our phone’s wallet, sometimes contactless payment may not be available. If the country you are going to has a currency other than the Euro, you can order cash in the new currency from the bank before leaving to keep for emergencies.

Also find out about your account in digital banks, which sometimes allow you to convert euros into the new currency online later pay expenses directly in local currencypotentially even without commissions. If your friends have the same digital bank as you, it may happen that you can make instant transfers even without commissions. Super convenient for splitting expenses! These were just a few tips that were super useful to me when I moved to Denmark.
