The expectation is that the resources of the Amazon Fund will be used “effectively”, according to the researcher at the National Institute for Space Research Jean-Pierre Ometto.
On Monday (30), the meeting between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and German Chancellor Olaf Sholz marked the resumption of the Fund.
The German government announced a donation in the order of 200 million euros for projects to conserve forests and contain climate change in Brazil.
Of the amount, 35 million euros must be allocated to the Amazon Fund.
THE CNN Radio Ometto stated that the Lula government, with the Minister of the Environment Marina Silva, creates a positive expectation for how these resources will be used.
“Brazil is a ‘big player’ and it is a country that has a lot to contribute to the debate on reducing the impact of climate change,” he said.
According to him, the country is a latent “green power”, with enormous potential, considering “all elements of the diversity that Brazil has.”
The INPE researcher pointed out that in the early 2000s, through the Amazon Fund, very important actions were possible.
“We reduced deforestation by 80%, then it stabilized and grew in recent years.”
According to him, there is a relationship between the contribution of “how much the countries put into the Fund” with “the amount of reduction in carbon emissions from deforestation.”
This, therefore, allowed a substantial reduction in deforestation.
“And that brought more money to continue supporting actions, so the Fund is a very important mechanism for these actions”, he added.
