Expert explains how to avoid being bitten by the dengue mosquito

The campaign “Together Against Dengue – A CNN Brasil action” , aims to alert the public about the symptoms, how to prevent it and everything that involves this disease that has been bringing risks to the population. A survey carried out by Google at the request of CNN , shows the terms most searched by Brazilians in relation to dengue. One of the main questions is about prevention. The team at CNN went to the streets to listen to the population and this question also appeared. After all, how to avoid mosquito bites?

Dengue disease is transmitted by the bite of an infected female Aedes aegypti mosquito. This is because only the female needs to consume blood to survive, as only she produces the eggs. Therefore, she is responsible for transmitting the dengue virus, while the male only feeds on nectar and plant sap.

To avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, doctor Maura Salaroli, infectious disease specialist at Hospital Sírio Libanês, explains that the main action is to eliminate dengue breeding sites, “80% of outbreaks are close to the home”.

“Another important measure is the use of repellents. We have repellents with three types of active ingredients: DEET, icaridin and IR3535. Another measure is the use of mosquito nets, especially for babies, because the use of repellents is contraindicated in children under six months of age”, says the specialist.

Proliferation of the dengue mosquito, Aedes aegypti

The dengue mosquito only lays its eggs in still and clean water not necessarily drinkable, but with little decomposing organic material.

It preferably lays eggs in days with high temperatures . Therefore, outbreaks of the disease usually occur in summer .

Aedes aegypti chooses locations damp close to the water surface, and not directly on the surface, allowing their eggs to remain in a dry environment for a year and remain viable, capable of generating adult mosquitoes when they find the right conditions to hatch

Eggs other mosquitoes however, they can be placed directly in dirty and contaminated water.
