The Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, said on Thursday (12) that the Investment Partnerships Program (PPI), linked to the portfolio, will proceed with studies to privatize Petrobras and Pré-sal Petróleo SA (PPSA).
The speech took place after the new Minister of Mines and Energy, Adolfo Sachsida, formalized the request to start the privatization studies of PPSA.
In an interview with CNN this Thursday, Adriano Pires, economist and director of the Brazilian Center for Infrastructure, said that the debate on the privatization of the state-owned company “is more mature”, but it is a long-term project, which must be addressed by the next government.
“Discussion of privatization is more mature, five ten years ago it was impossible. In the short term, we have to resolve the issue of price, which worries the government and takes away votes. In the long term, we have to discuss privatization, it depends more on the next government”, said the economist.
Pires, who declined the nomination to preside over Petrobras last month, believes that the high price of fuel worries the federal government. “The government thinks that the price of fuel is hindering the chances of Bolsonaro’s possible re-election,” he said.
However, the economist says that the president should not take any hasty measures. “The worst way to hold prices would be to interfere with Petrobras and control prices. I’m worried about some white intervention until the elections”, evaluates Pires.
For political scientist Creomar de Souza, the debate over privatization of Petrobras is “a smokescreen” for the federal government. “They say that the best way to not solve something in Brasília is to create a working group. There is a smokescreen, which serves to take the focus off inflation, fuel prices and other elements,” he said in an interview with CNN .
However, Creomar believes that the government’s insistence on the matter is designed to generate a wrong response from other electoral candidates, especially former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
“Bolsonaro and his advisers hope that this movement will awaken in Lula’s campaign the good old improvised, emotional response that can serve the president’s campaign,” said the political scientist.
