Even in an unpromising scenario of the economy, unemployment fell again in Brazil and recorded the lowest level since 2015, closing the month of May at 9.8%. Despite this, informality is still high and represents more than 40% of all vacancies, which partly explains the 7% drop in income, compared to the same period in 2021.
The IBGE data help to understand the result of another study, recently released by Fundação Getúlio Vargas Social. The survey shows that, between 2019 and 2021, 9.6 million people entered the poverty line in Brazil, the worst mark since measurement began in 2012.
The study points out that the problem affects more the North and Northeast regions, where all the states have a poverty index above the national average. The most affected state is Maranhão, with almost 58% of the population living on up to R$497 per month.
In this episode of E Tem Mais, Muriel Porfiro presents an assessment of the factors that allowed the reduction of unemployment in Brazil at the same time that the worker’s income remains low.
Participating in the edition are Marcelo Neri, director of FGV Social, and Bruno Imaizumi, economist at LCA Consultores.
