Experts explain the origin of a “door” on Mars captured by NASA

On May 7, NASA’s Mars Curiosity Rover, a vehicle that has been exploring the surface of Mars for the past ten years, caught some photographs that show what appears to be a “door” perfectly carved into the rocky surface of the red planet.

After these images were released, the Internet exploded due to the discovery of an alleged “alien door” on Mars. Users of social networks and forums such as Reddit they began to spread the belief that the sighting could be proof of extraterrestrial life. According to them, the supposed door could lead to a secret Martian hideout.

However, experts such as Professor Sanjeev Gupta, from the Imperial University of London, who has worked on the Curiosity mission with NASA, ensures that what conspiracy theorists call a “gate” is actually a natural fracture corresponding to “normal geological processes,” which can be seen elsewhere on Mars and Earth.

The professor specified that inside the cave there is evidence of a “deep crack or fissure” in the rock that could have occurred at any time in the last hundreds of millions of years, corresponding to a “shear fracture”, that is, that probably the earthquakes caused tension in the rock, which generated the breakage and detachment of a part of it.

The expert assures that marsquakes, as earthquakes that occur on Mars are called, are common and the last one recorded was on May 4, which could have caused the formation of the “door”.

On the other hand, the issue of perspective was also put on the table, since the shot presents too much zoom. A NASA spokesman told snoopsa place Web fact check, how small is the crack:

Approximately 30 centimeters wide and 45 centimeters wide. They said that there are linear fractures along this outcrop and this is a place where several linear fractures intersect.
