Experts find 98 buffalo carcasses in a ditch in the interior of São Paulo

A total of 98 buffalo carcasses, four horse skulls and one dog skull were found buried in a ditch, after inspection by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the University of São Paulo (FMVZ-USP), on the Água Sumida property, between Brotas and Ribeirão Bonito, in the interior of São Paulo.

Last weekend, the experts gathered at the place where 335 buffaloes and 332 calves were found by the Environmental Military Police, on November 6, in a poor state of health. They were confined in a tight place, with no vegetation, in addition to having no access to water and food.

The work fronts were concentrated in two different ditches, one of them called a “cemetery” by local employees, where several complete animal skulls and loose jaws were found.

“We also found buried buffalo corpses, around 58, which I believe in this ditch of recently buried animals. So, in the cemetery, there were skulls and the remains of animals that were buried a long time ago, and in the other ditch, animals that died recently were found. So, adding up the total of these two ditches, there were 98 buffaloes, corpses, buffalo skulls and four horse skulls and a dog skull”, declared professor Claudia Momo, from FMVZ-USP, who took part in the survey.

According to Momo, a necropsy report will now be carried out on the carcasses of the animals, which will be delivered to the Civil Police, who will send it to the expert responsible for the case. Previously, 22 dead animals had been found at the site.

The owner of the property, Luiz Augusto Pinheiro de Souza, was arrested in the act and fined R$2.1 million on November 11th. He posted bail and is free for the crime of ill-treatment. Upon leaving the police station, the owner denied the charges.

The City of Brotas signed a partnership with an NGO to treat the more than 600 buffaloes and calves found at the site.
