Experts in the Henry Borel case are heard by the Justice this Wednesday (1st)

This Wednesday (1st) takes place another step in the trial of former Rio councilor, Jairo Souza Santos Júnior and Monique Medeiros, accused of the death of the boy Henry Borel, in March 2021.

The hearing, at the Rio Forum, started 1:30 am late. The first to testify is coroner Leonardo Huber Tauil, who signed the child’s autopsy report. In addition to him, assistant coach Sami El Jundi, hired by Jairinho’s lawyers to assist in the case, will also be heard.

During the hearing, Judge Elizabeth Machado Louro, from the 2nd Criminal Court of Rio, had to interrupt the session because of a heated argument between the former councilor’s defender and the prosecutor’s assistant.

Before the beginning of the hearing, lawyer Cláudio Dalledone, who represents Jairo Souza, promised a turnaround in the case.

“This need that Henry had already arrived dead, this need that they had attended to a corpse for more than two hours, today, will be unveiled. Today, there will be a confrontation. A confrontation that the Public Prosecutor’s Office never did, that the judge did not want to allow, if it weren’t for the court’s order. That’s why the defense is saying, courageously and technically, there will be a comeback,” said Dalledone.

Jairo Souza will not be heard this Wednesday. The interrogation, which was postponed in May, is scheduled to take place on the 13th of June . The testimony of the former councilor is the last step before the trial. On February 8, Jairinho refused to answer questions in deposition.

Monique Medeiros, Henry’s mother and also a defendant in the case, was excused from attending. The defense argued that she already testified for about 11 hours in February this year and therefore no further hearing is required.

Doctor Jairinho is currently imprisoned in the Gericinó Penitentiary Complex, in Bangu, in the West Zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Monique Medeiros has been under house arrest for approximately a month.

The former councilor and the teacher are accused by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of triple qualified homicide for the death of Henry Borel, aged 8, on March 8 of last year. The boy reportedly suffered torture in the apartment where they lived in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Both deny the crimes.

On May 24, the President of the Republic Jair Bolsonaro (PL) sanctioned the Henry Borel Law, which makes murder against a person under 14 a heinous crime and establishes specific protective measures for children and adolescents who are victims of domestic and family violence.

“In this way, by becoming heinous, the crime becomes non-bailable and insusceptible of amnesty, grace and pardon. In addition, the convict is subject to a closed initial regime, among other consequences”, highlights an excerpt from Law 14,344 of 2022.

After participating in a peaceful demonstration in front of the Forum, calling for justice for Henry’s death, the child’s father spoke to the press and spoke about his grief over the boy’s death.

“May the expert show everything he saw and clarify this truth that we all know is well-founded about the case. What was said by Monique and Jairo, to me and to the doctors, is that Henry was breathing on the way and that he was still alive, that’s why the doctors tried a resuscitation process”, said Leniel Borel.

“If they had said that my son had been hit, that they had hit my son, that he had been beaten, maybe Henry would be alive because the medical procedure could be different, but no, they omitted what they did that day. night with Henry and took away the entire possibility of my son getting out alive and being here with us today,” he added.
