Hezbollah walkie-talkies that have exploded across Lebanon are likely to be among tens of thousands of fakes, according to the manager of Japanese radio equipment maker Icom. The explosion of radios and buzzers last week killed at least 35 people and injured hundreds more. Some of the walkie-talkies had Icom tags. Icom launched an investigation into the devices and said the IC-V82 portable wireless was also exported to the Middle East from 2004 to October 2014. “We manufactured and shipped 160,000 of these V82 radios in 10 years before discontinuing them approx. a decade,” Icom executive and board member Yoshiki Enomoto told the Financial Times. “It is possible that the same number of counterfeit models are still circulating today.” The company said the devices pictured in the photos after the attack appeared to be missing a special stamp used to distinguish counterfeits.
