Explosion in gas pipeline connecting Lithuania and Latvia – Cause under investigation

An explosion caused damage today to conduit natural gas of Amber Grid, which connects the Baltic countries with Poland, in the north Lithuania without causing any casualties, the gas transmission company of Lithuania announced.

Video released by Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT shows a fire raging at the site of the blast in Panevezys County in northern Lithuania.

Flames rose about 50 meters into the sky and were visible at least 17 kilometers away, the LRT said.

“We are investigating the cause of the explosion”said an Amber Grid spokesperson.

The company announced that according to the initial estimates, it does not see malicious causes for the explosion, but the investigations will cover all possible scenarios.

The fire will soon be extinguished as the gas supply has been shut off, Amber Grid said.

Povilas Baltsiunas, head of public administration in the nearby town of Paslavis, told Reuters the fire was still raging at 19:50 Greek time.

Police were preparing to evacuate a village near the scene, Baltic news agency BNS reported.

No injuries or deaths have been reported, BNS added.
