Explosions are heard near Kiev and Russian troops approach the capital

teams of CNN in Kiev reported hearing explosions in the early hours of Saturday morning, with international correspondent Clarissa Ward describing “an uninterrupted noise of loud bangs in the distance” for several minutes.

It is unclear whether the blasts were Russian or Ukrainian attacks, she said.

Fighting continues on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital, with city administration saying areas to the north remain the most dangerous, including the suburbs of Bucha, Irpin and Hostomel, as well as Kiev’s northernmost Vyshorod district. Fighting also escalated in Brovary, across the Dnieper River, east of the city.

As Russian forces press in from various directions, “the concern becomes that the intention is to completely encircle the city, withdraw access to resources, bomb the city, and ultimately try to overthrow the government of Zelensky (Ukrainian President),” , said Ward.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko told CNN that the city currently only has resources – including food and medical supplies – for one to two weeks.

Ward added that “Ukrainian forces are everywhere” in Kiev. “They’ve dug defensive positions along all the main roads leading into the city, laid traps for tanks. This is a heavily fortified city now. And even if Russian forces manage to encircle it, it will still be a mighty battle for conquest.”
